The Pedemontana Veneta: a land rich in ancient villas, roads among the vineyards, forgotten abbeys and medieval villages. Our itinerary starts from Castelfranco Veneto and takes us to the splendid Montello area, rich in history and charm.

From Castelfranco Veneto to Montello

We depart from Castelfranco Veneto, a walled city in the Marca Trevigiana, and take the SP101 to our first stop: Fanzolo di Vedelago. Here we can admire Villa Emo, a splendid residence designed by Andrea Palladio with frescoes by Battista Zelotti. We continue in the direction of Montebelluna until we reach the Montello area.

Montello is a rise of karstic origin that extends to the centre of the Veneto region, halfway between the Venice Lagoon and the Belluno Dolomites. We begin to climb along gentle curves: we are inside the Montello forest, an area where the most important moments of the Great War took place after the defeat of Caporetto.
In this particular area, which reaches a height of more than 350 metres and bars the road to the Piave River, we can see many monuments dedicated to the fallen soldiers. We continue along the road and arrive in the vicinity of Nervesa della Battaglia.

With a short deviation you could reach ‘Ai Pioppi‘, an incredible place that I recommend seeing. It is an inn with an amusement park that was built in 1969 and operates without electricity. The entrance is free and from 12 noon you can have lunch in the park.

We cross the Ponte della Priula bridge in the direction of Colfosco. We remain on the SP34 and turn into Via Francesco Baracca. We take the small road via San Daniele that leads to the Tombola hill and descend along via San Salvatore, in the direction of Susegana. We arrive at San Salvatore Castle, of very ancient Lombard origin and now a private residence.

From Refrontolo to Asolo via the Prosecco road

We leave the castle and travel 14 km to Refrontolo, a small village where we can observe the famous Molinetto della Croda, a perfectly functioning ancient water mill nestled in the hills. We cross and a breathtaking landscape of vineyards appears: this is the Prosecco area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Before the bell tower, we turn right passing La Rosada, the village’s ancient wash-houses and drinking troughs where the inhabitants met to do their laundry and water their livestock.
A few bends and ups and downs between the rows of vines take us onto the SP4, which we take in an easterly direction to Cison di Valmarino, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
We continue past Follina, with its famous Cistercian abbey, and Combai, a village famous for its chestnuts.

We are surrounded by greenery and the winding roads wind through an area rich in nature and order. The SP36 takes us to Valdobbiadene where the famous Prosecco wine gets its name.

Tip: You can stop for an excellent prosecco at the Osteria La Terrazza where you can also eat with a splendid view of the vineyards.
Address: Strada S. Pietro, 73/A, 31049 Valdobbiadene (TV)

We descend southwards taking the SP2 and at Covolo we take the SP84. Past Cornuda we can admire the Villa di Maser, built by Andrea Palladio between 1554 and 1558. We will arrive in Asolo, a splendid village defined as “the city of a thousand horizons”, but we will let you discover the reason for this name.
